Tenerife's biggest and brashest resort is a magnet for young, predominantly British tourists in search of some serious partying and fun in the sun. With year-round good temperatures and a wide range of accommodation, it's a package holiday mecca.
It's certainly not the place to go for a typical cultural Canary Islands experience. It's also not recommended for families as the noise levels at night make getting a good night's sleep near impossible. If, however, you're after a lively but carefree break on good beaches with all the comforts of home, then this is the place for you.
Getting there/around Playa de las Americas
The resort is about 20 minutes drive from the Reina Sofia airport and once there, it's easy to get around. There's a mini train that runs around most of Playa de las Americas stopping at clearly marked spots every hour. There are also free buses so you've no excuse really not to explore a bit.
If you want to see more of the island, then hiring a car is definitely the best option.
Playa de las Americas beaches
There are several beaches in the resort - some are natural and others are man-made, but all are covered in dark volcanic sand. They're all very close to each other and most of them are linked by a long promenade lined with hotels, apartment blocks, restaurants, bars and cafes.
The swimming's safe thanks to man-made breakers and there are lots of watersports on offer too. The only negative is that space can be tight in the extremely busy summer season.
Playa de las Americas sightseeing
There really is nothing of note in the town itself so you'll need to head further afield. The lively former capital of the island, La Laguna, is worth a look. It's a pretty little place where fine-balconied houses with brightly-coloured facades and sturdy wooden doors line the narrow streets.
